| West Area Project History |
|
In 1987 a Project coordinator was able to be employed and they obtained registration for charitable status. They were well on their way to providing a service that meant more people who lived in the West Area of Nottingham and who had a learning disability had a place to go where they could meet new people, have fun, learn new skills and feel part of the community. This service continues to provide care and support which meets realistic individual goals and fulfils a growing demand. The original name was West Area Parents but this was changed as many enquirers found it confusing and thought it concerned children and not adults. |

In the
early 1980s, a group of parents met to discuss the problems arising from the
lack of statutory day care services for their sons and daughters who had
learning disabilities. As parents and carers they knew what care their sons and
daughters needed, so together with a social worker and many letters to
councillors and other organizations asking for support, they were offered a
grant from joint finance of £15,000. A house became available from the City
Council and it seemed that their dream was closer to becoming a reality.
