What to do if... Noise Nuisance1. If you are concerned about noise, often the best way to deal with the problem is to go to the source. Talk to the person or company responsible for the noise and point out the problem. Often they may not be aware that they are disturbing you. 2. If this direct approach doesn't work, you might want to consider mediation. An independent third party will listen to the views of both parties and help them to reach an agreement. For more details, phone Nottingham Mediation Service on 0115 9620035.
3. When informal action is not possible, you can complain to your local authority. Nottingham City Council has a noise hotline on 0115 915 6170 . If the Council witnesses the noise and is satisfied that it is a statutory nuisance, they can take immediate action. If the noise is intermittent, the Council may ask you to keep details of the noise in the form of a diary, or leave equipment to record it. Sometimes it will measure noise as part of its investigation, but there is no set level at which noise becomes a statutory nuisance. 4. The Council will try to solve the problem informally, but if this fails it has the power to serve an abatement notice requiring the noise to be stopped altogether or at certain times of the day. 5. If the offender fails to comply with the abatement notice, this becomes an offence. Magistrates have the power to fine offenders up to £5,000 for offences relating to domestic properties, or £20,000 if the complaint relates to business premises. 6. Local authorities also have the power to gain entry to a property to allow its officers to abate a noise. This may involve seizing hi-fi equipment. But the most common use of this power is to stop misfiring burglar alarms. Courtesy of the Nottingham Evening Post Back to top Flytipping

Flytipped items can include household waste, larger items such as fridges and mattresses, garden rubbish and firms' commercial waste. Some of this may seem very familiar to Dunkirk and Lenton residents who witness the clearing of student houses during the summer months!
