What is
West Area Project?
West
Area Project is a registered charity (No. 701055), operated by a board of
trustees made up of of Parents and Carers. The organisation works with and for
adults having learning disabilities. The resource centre is supported by
volunteers working together with other helpers who come from a wide variety of
backgrounds.
It
has a history of incorporated effort from the community to
deliver an excellent service for people with learning disabilities.
Main Activities:
- A day resource
center for adults with learning disabilities.
- All the activities
are based on the individual needs of the Service Users. They are provided with
their own personal care plan to help them progress towards
a more independence:
- Monday AM
Sport and
Recreation
Each week a visiting Tutor from Peoples
College comes to take our group of Service Users through a programme of sport
and recreation. They go to local parks for outdoor activities such as football,
cricket, swimming and rounders, and also do indoor activities such as
badminton, basketball, indoor football, snooker, etc.

Advocacy
This involves a wide range of situations
to develop people's ability to choose and express opinions.
- Tuesday

Out and About
This is a very popular activity that
utilizes the community and its resources by visiting parks, museums, markets,
etc.
- Wednesday AM
Literacy and
Numeracy
Each week we run a session for people who
are keen to learn basic reading and writing skills, such as letter writing,
numeracy work, telephone training and social sign awareness.
Educational Activity
This is an activity where a small group
learns social skills, interacting with other members of the community.
- Wednesday PM
Arts and Craft
This encourages everyone to express
themselves in various media, including ink, paints, chalk, clay, making of
masks, pictures, and pots etc.
Collage and fabric painting.
- Thursday AM
Music
Music plays and important role in the development
of our Service Users.
- Thursday PM
Learning for
Life Skills
We
are bringing to our Service Users a programme that gives a wide range of life
skills that will lead to an independent life style of their own: shopping,
budgeting, paying bills, first aid and home safety, basic cooking skills and
much more.
- Friday
all day
This is classed as
a leisure day, some go shopping while others stay behind to clean the house and
help prepare and cook the meal. In the afternoon some people like to watch television,
play table games or have a group discussion on various topics.
