West Area Project

ImageWhat is West Area Project?

West Area Project is a registered charity (No. 701055), operated by a board of trustees made up of of Parents and Carers. The organisation works with and for adults having learning disabilities. The resource centre is supported by volunteers working together with other helpers who come from a wide variety of backgrounds.

It has a history of incorporated effort from the community to deliver an excellent service for people with learning disabilities.

Main Activities:

  • A day resource center for adults with learning disabilities.
  • All the activities are based on the individual needs of the Service Users. They are provided with their own personal care plan to help them progress towards a more independence:

  • Monday AM
    Sport and Recreation
Each week a visiting Tutor from Peoples College comes to take our group of Service Users through a programme of sport and recreation. They go to local parks for outdoor activities such as football, cricket, swimming and rounders, and also do indoor activities such as badminton, basketball, indoor football, snooker, etc.
  • Monday PM
    Advocacy
This involves a wide range of situations to develop people's ability to choose and express opinions.

  • Tuesday all day
    Out and About
This is a very popular activity that utilizes the community and its resources by visiting parks, museums, markets, etc.

  • Wednesday AM
    Literacy and Numeracy
Each week we run a session for people who are keen to learn basic reading and writing skills, such as letter writing, numeracy work, telephone training and social sign awareness.
    Educational Activity
This is an activity where a small group learns social skills, interacting with other members of the community.
  • Wednesday PM
    Arts and Craft
This encourages everyone to express themselves in various media, including ink, paints, chalk, clay, making of masks, pictures, and pots etc.
    Collage and fabric painting.

  • Thursday AM
    Music
Music plays and important role in the development of our Service Users.
  • Thursday PM
    Learning for Life Skills
We are bringing to our Service Users a programme that gives a wide range of life skills that will lead to an independent life style of their own: shopping, budgeting, paying bills, first aid and home safety, basic cooking skills and much more.

  • Friday all day
This is classed as a leisure day, some go shopping while others stay behind to clean the house and help prepare and cook the meal. In the afternoon some people like to watch television, play table games or have a group discussion on various topics.
