OSCAR (Organization for Sickle Cell Anaemia Research)
What is OSCAR?
Oscar is an national organisation and registered charity (No. 1054548), founded in 1975 and working in Nottingham since 1980. OSCAR Nottingham was set up by a group of people concerned at the lack of specialist care and information for those with Sickle Cell Anaemia, their families, carers and other who come into contact with people with these disorders e.g. social workers, teachers and employers.
What are Sickle Cell disorders?
Sickle Cell Disorders is the name given to a group of disorders affecting the haemoglobin, a substance found in the red blood cells (the cells responsible for carrying oxygen around the body). Sickle Cell Anaemia is the most severe of these disorders.
Main Activities:
Provide welfare rights and advice sessions to the ones in need, with assistance with form filling in conjunction with Nottingham Welfare Rights Service (Every Wednesday 10am – 12noon)
Provide housing advise sessions in conjunction with SHELTER by appointment
A support group for parents of children with Sickle Cell Disorders and a support group for young people
Social events throughout the year to raise funds and also to highlight Sickle Cell Disorders
Provide a safe and comfortable drop in facility where people can come to discuss any problems they may be experiencing on a one to one basis and in complete confidence

OSCAR works with various volunteers, from time to time, therefore future volunteers are welcome to participate and help the group.
